Only if the content is monitored. I love it and use it all the time but I see why we are blocking it in our district. We really have no choice. Interestingly, the day before our very restrictive filter was placed in service, the most frequently visited site was YouTube.

I think some sites are teacher sites. YouTube being one of them. We the teachers preview, and then if appropriate we use it. Unfortunately, there is some content that is not appropriate and we need to protect our students as well as ourselves. Yes it is a great tool, no I don't believe it should be in the classroom. We have plenty of other sites students can explore United Streaming, National Geographic, Nasa, etc.
I use YouTube all the time, even for my own entertainment, or when I look funny things to show in my workshops. TeacherTube is more appropriate, though I think students can create their own then Podcast it! That will be more beneficial to them.

I agree with Ana. There's so much out there including FREE National Geographic video podcasts. I highly recommend you go to iTunes and subscribe to the the National Geographic series. They are amazing and FREE!. I also recommend more "Tubes." We now have Teacher Tube, as Ana mentioned, School Tube and even God Tube!

It's not a problem of not enough information these days, but just the opposite - too much information!

I love the conversations!

I love YouTube...I watch the most random things on it. But I do not think that it belongs in the classroom for general consumption. I believe that YouTube is best used in the classroom by a teacher finding something appropriate for a specific activity (eg Mentos and Coke for a lesson on chemical reactions) and then sharing it.

The Meerkat manor is one of my favorite shows. There is so much to learn from this fantastic group of little animals. Talking about YouTube and all the resources available for Videos in the classroom, I thought you might be interested on this. Animal Planet has its own video player where you can watch without buffering different episodes form this show and some others. The player downloads to your computer IBM or MAC. You can then use this shows in class for retelling, writing, values, you name it!
Here is the link for the player: http://video.discovery.com/

Dear Ana,

You have added SO much richness to our conversations, but this is the most incredible find. I couldn't believe how easy it was to download, then launch and watch full screen, full quality Discovery shows on demand. You go girl! I will definitely highlight this in an upcoming "tuesdays!"

Thanks!
