Must-read summer reading

I just finished Made to Stick. It is a very good book about making your ideas stick - whether it is a lesson your are teaching or a product you want to sell. Like others, I happen to be reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. I have just finished The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson which I found pretty funny in a nostalgic sort of way - even though the author's a bit older than I am.

Google Earth for Younger Students

I was looking for something for my younger students and found a website called Google Lit Trips a while back. I used an idea to use with the book Make Way for Ducklings. I wrote a blog post about my research and the actual lesson. Hopefully, you will find that helpful.

Google Earth for Younger Students

Hi Donna, My Grade 4s used it to look at the different views from bird's eye view to oblique view. We then compared this to what we saw in a traditional atlas. We discussed which view was best for different situations. We discussed how features can be lost in bird's eye view and that in oblique view things at the back can be hidden. Then the students created their own maps based on what they had learnt. Helen

What would it take to make you switch to Linux?

I switched my daughter to Ubuntu when she was 5 and she took to it like a duck in water. She used it more than her Windows machines and enjoys showing her compiz desktop off to friends... spinning cube, expo (which Apple stole) and other cool stuff. I started running Linux at work (I support Windows) about a year ago and this has assisted me with helping our Mac folks out as we integrate them with AD. At home I have switched to Ubuntu myself after going through a cycle of Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch and finally back to Ubuntu (though I also intend on running Arch on my other workstation and Debian or Fedora as my server). While I liked the 'eye candy' at first I only run compiz now for expo as I find it actually useful. I do think the 'pretty' factor will at least get people to take a look at the OS. My OS choices now would be: Linux Windows BSD ReactOS OS/2 OS X

Walk Now for Autism fund-raising event. Autism Speaks - Walk Now for Autism is the signature fundraising event of Autism Speaks and is the nation's largest Walk program dedicated to autism research. Since its inception in May 2000 we have collectively raised tens of millions of dollars to fund autism reasearch. We have come far in that time, but so much remains to be done.
